Learn to Spin & Dye Cotton and Hemp with Joan Ruane

Classic Cotton and Hemp Spinning & Dyeing Workshop with Joan Ruane.   June 24-25, 2017.  $200.00 ($20.00 materials fee).  Saturday only option:  $125.00.  $50.00 deposit holds your space.  Email or call the shop to register.  Saturday:  10 AM-5 PM.  Sunday:  9 AM-4 PM. 

Designed for All Levels- of Spinners* * Spinner must be able to able to keep their wheel spinning clockwise consistently.

Snacks, water and coffee provided (and refrigerator available).  Lunch will be ordered in from a variety of fine local restaurants (which have gluten free and other options). 

We are excited to host Joan Ruane at MadWool for the second year in a row!  She had so much fun here, she couldn't wait to plan a new workshop.  This year, we will learn about dyeing cotton and how to spin hemp!   Joan is an amazing and gifted teacher, and can make any spinner learn to love to spin cotton. 

Workshop goalTo show students how to dye cellulose fibers with Cushing Dyes and then the spinning techniques for both fibers.   

Day 1. DYEING & REVIEWING COTTON SPINNING

 The first morning will be dedicated to dyeing cotton & hemp fiber.  Using Cushing dyes students will learn how to scour and dye lint and also paint their own cotton sliver. The hemp fiber will be painted. Cotton carding techniques and blending colored lint to design heathered punis to spin will fill the morning session.  In the afternoon students will then learn how and why to adjust their wheel for this fine, short staple fiber and will begin learning how to spin their punis.

                                            Learn the basic techniques of spinning cotton by using the prepared punis.  

Day 2.   COTTON & HEMP SPINNING  In the morning we will review spinning techniques for cotton. Students will have an opportunity of learning to spin cotton off the seed as well as prepared “Easy to Spin” cotton sliver   Students will ply their cotton singles and understand balanced ply.    In the afternoon techniques for spinning hemp will be taught.
