Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery practice which uses a simple running stitch to create bold and geometric patterns on textiles. This stitching practice has been used for centuries and continues into our current times to mend, strengthen, quilt, and embellish garments and home goods. With focus on exploration of the craft, workshop participants will learn how to handle thread, layout a simple grid, draw patterns, employ a Sashiko needle, and use "small stabs" to stitch designs onto their sampler squares. Choose from a variety of traditional patterns. The beautiful stitched squares can be used as a patch, a pocket, a framed textile, a tiny bag, or a coaster.
Please bring your good reading glasses, favorite snips or small scissors, and a thimble if you use one.
Each kit will include a pair of Olympus brand Sashiko needles, a tapestry needle threader, one skein of thread, fabric sampler squares, and pattern instructions to take home. Plus- access to communal Sashiko threads, fabric markers, pencils, stencils, templates, and rulers.
