Indigo is a plant based blue dye originating in India and prized for centuries for it’s ability to produce fast deep blues on all fibers. Indigo has been traditionally used in many cultures as a dye, from Japanese to African, each culture lending it’s own patterns and techniques.
In this day of blue, we will learn about different types of indigo vats and methods of dyeing. We will explore the Japanese art of Shibori, a traditional method of clamping and tying to create patterns and texture on fabrics.
What to expect:
Included in class are 4 cotton napkins and a silk scarf as well as all dyes and equipment needed to dye.
Please bring: a pair of long dishwashing gloves, clothes you don’t mind getting blue and any note taking materials you may want. Other useful but not necessary items to bring include large clamps (like giant clothespins) and regular clothespins.
**There will be extra dye, so please feel free to bring along some dyeables from home. We will be dipping our items into a 5 gallon bucket, so please limit personal items to smaller sizes-t shirts, skeins of yarn, fabric less than one yard etc.. Please limit to 2-3 pieces so everyone can partake. Please prewash anything from home.
